At eight, make room for their ideas and choices

To plan a book for an eight-year-old, first ask what they would like to experience: exploring a planet, solving a mystery or completing a mission with a friend. Ask about the tone too: funny, adventurous or gentle. Their preferences are a better guide than assuming every child this age wants action.

Here is a story idea to adapt: an island's observatory stops working before a night of stargazing. The hero and their companion must understand the fault, choose a solution and work together to put it into practice. The challenge comes from a decision and its consequences, without piling on dangers or enemies.

Invite them to suggest a place, an important object and a quality they would like their character to show. You can ask the story to show perseverance or teamwork through a specific action. A clear brief leaves room for adventure; too many instructions can make a short story hard to follow.

The visual choice matters too: compare the 6 illustration styles available instead of choosing solely by age. This picture book can sit alongside novels they already enjoy, with more space given to images. Review the text and illustrations before approval; reading alone or together remains a choice for each child.

My child already reads novels. Will this book suit them?

It is a personalised picture book, not a long novel. Its appeal is seeing their ideas and character illustrated. Look at the preview together to check whether they enjoy the format.

How can I avoid a story that feels too young?

Describe their interests, the tone and the kind of challenge you want. Choose the visual style together too. During review, you can request an adjustment if the result does not match your intention.

Can we use an interest in space or science?

Yes. Describe what interests them: observing the stars, exploring a planet or inventing a robot. Specify the setting, the mission and the important details to give this fictional story a direction.

Can I request a longer story for an eight-year-old?

The format remains 13 illustrated double-page spreads. Age does not add extra chapters; a well-defined mission works better than a saga with several plots.

What should I prepare for a personal birthday gift?

A photo of the child alone, their name, a current interest and an adventure idea are enough to begin. Add other characters with their own photos if you want to include them.
