At six, start with what makes them want to open a book
When choosing a book for a six-year-old, start with their interests rather than an assumed reading level. A child may enjoy listening to a long story while still learning to decode words. A personalised picture book brings together a familiar face, a chosen subject and time spent reading with an adult.
Prepare their name, a photo showing the child alone and a detail that matters to them: a favourite soft toy, a familiar place or an interest. Enter their age in the creator. For a first story, you can request a clear goal and few detours, rather than a large cast and many twists.
Here is one story idea you could suggest: the child and their soft toy look for a lost letter in a familiar garden. A footprint, an encounter and a recovered object create a sequence that is easy to retell. This is an example to personalise, not a story supplied identically to every child.
While reading, let them look at the picture first, spot their name or say what they think might happen next. If they prefer listening, an adult can read the whole text. The free preview shows the opening and the characters' appearance before you choose a plan; it does not assess reading ability.
